An ancient Eucalyptus fell, and was taken for wood-chipping. I went to the tree and began to collect the leaves, bark and wood, taking only what I could carry. People saw me by the side of the road and told me the trunk had been taken to the local dump. I went to take photos of this ancient relic, and the tree was offered to me, 6 tonnes of wood, it was too big for their machinery. So I became the custodian of the tree, and the tree became my teacher. I often returned to the original site where the tree had grown, watching as the once fresh leaves dried and decayed, slowly returning to the earth, and a new tree began to grow from the stump that remained. The leaves in the images record this. Using Eco Dyeing as a process to help the leaves tell their story, I draw on my European ancestry of using plants to colour cloth. Layering process with identity, to tell my story of how I connect to this place. This ancient tree predates the colonisation of this area, it has stood witness over time to massive changes. Tree Place is the name for that this project took into the community to read more of the happenings. LINK

This series gives voice to the trees message of resilience and connectedness, of the cycle of oneness that it lives within. Everything an integral part of the interconnectedness, one supporting the other. The beauty of each leaf is simple and easily understood, there is such perfection in every part of this natural cycle.
